I am listing a variety of nice estate-fresh Antique and Vintage Items this week.   Here is a Fine and Rare c.1880’s AMERICAN 12-INCH TERRESTRIAL LIBRARY GLOBE ON AESTHETIC MOVEMENT STAND WITH FINE COMPASS SET IN BASE made by O.D. CASE & CO. of HARTFORD, CT.. It is approx. 37.5″ high. Original Ebonized and Gilt surface to stand with original “60402. CASE” stenciling on bottom of stand. Lovely Aesthetic Movement Carved Flower Designs on legs. Zodiac and Months Graphics Ring on top of stand. Don’t know precise date of Globe, but “DAKOTA” is still undivided (divided in Nov. 1889) and still Indian Territory instead of Oklahoma, so at least 1880’s vintage. Don’t know if earlier than 1880’s however. I was not even able to find another O.D. Case Library Globe anywhere in my research, so possibly a scarce Globe. Handsome Metal and Glass Compass with turn knob for locking compass needle when transporting. Locking mechanism works fine. Compass needle moves smoothly, but don’t know if it accurately points to true North or not.

Condition: The Globe itself is in “As Is” condition, with a surface crack line zig-zagging 3/4 of the way around the Equator (see close-ups). Only a few small losses to graphics around crack line however. Losses to paper around North Pole. Some other wear and chipped spots to graphics on globe. Varnish with old yellowed patina on Globe with some areas (mostly around middle) having the more original brighter blue color where probably the old varnish has worn away. Globe has still kept it’s shape. The Globe will revolve on stand, however the bottom axis need to be lifted up slightly in order for globe to turn completely without rubbing against ring. The Zodiac Ring on stand with most all of it’s graphics intact with exception of a missing chip to paper on inner edge above “Cancer” (see photo). Paper on ring in dark, old, untouched patina. Ebonzied wood stand itself is in very nice condition, with still bright gilt decoration and only a bit of wear to some edges of legs and feet in bottom half. No cracks to legs. Stand is firm and solid. Wonderful Antique Library Globe. Puchased fresh out of a nice local estate this past weekend.
