This is a scarce early combination lock. It has three dials that are all very different. The outer dial is a knurled ring, the middle inner has two balls on it, and the center is almost like a thumbscrew. The lock was made in France and has the name JAP or JAMP on it. I can’t figure out if that is supposed to be an A & an M in the center or not. On David Heuermann’s website on Antique Padlocks these locks are listed as “JAP”. If you go look at the small one, (this one is 2-3/4″ high, and 1-3/4″ wide), on that website, you will notice that the shackle on this one is completely different. This lock has been professionally restored by Bob Heilemann. Someone had pulled the back off at one time, and he put it back on correctly. He also made a shackle spring for it. Bob has informed me that the combination on this lock is changeable. If you put a wire through the little hole at the top of the lock body when it is in the open position you can turn the outer, and inner knobs and reset the combination. The middle one with the two knobs stays set at 0. In order to open this lock all knobs are turned to left until they stop then each dial is turned the proper number of clicks to the right.
