This turn of the century Wall St. street sign is a treasured relic from the world’s most historic financial district dating from times of huge overnight fortunes through the Wall Street crash of 1929 and onset of the Great Depression. While Wall St. traces its name to the earliest Dutch settlement of Manhattan in the 1600’s, many people think of Wall St. and the stock market as one in the same. Historic scenes of Wall St. boom and bust immediately come to mind when first viewing this immense sign. The angular sign hung from a pole on the corner of Wall and New Streets. The sign carries great aesthetic appeal consisting of an ornate cast iron frame that measures over a foot tall and nearly five feet from one end to the other. Double-sided porcelain signs lettered in white with the main and cross street names are inset into the principal large rectangular frames and into smaller oval frames on top of the larger signs. As a result of its’ strong, weighty construction, this sign withstood many years outdoors as it stood at the corner of Wall and New Street in front of the historical Bank of New York building and the buildings of the New York Stock Exchange. While it is difficult to place a value on an historical artifact such as this, it is worth noting that a more contemporary sign from the corner of Wall and Broad Streets recently sold in excess of $115,000 at a major auction house in New York City. This is a rare opportunity to own such a prominent relic surviving from the epicenter of U.S. and world financial market history.
