This is a Japanese WWll army officer’s “Yasukuni shrine” sword in type 98 mountings. The blade is signed “Yasuoki 靖興, dated Showa Jugo-nen Hachi-gatsu kichi-jitsu (a lucky day Aug. 1940) 昭和十五年八月吉日”, shinogi-zukuri shape. Yasuoki’s real name is Shimazaki Naooki, born in 1915, studied under Kajiyama Yasunori at Nihonto Tanren-kai in Yasukuni shrine during WWll time period (ca.1940) and made swords as a gendai smith after the war. The World of Yasukunito The blade is traditional hand-forged, water tempered blade, in original WWll time polish, shows aged tiny staine, fine scratches on surface but no deep rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy gunome-choji with ko-nie(crystal) active temper pattern and has deep turn back temper at the point. The tight itame-hada forging is clearly visible throughout the blade and no forging flaws at all. There is no nick, no bend, no opening, no crack temper and cutting edge is very sharp. The scabbard is heavy metal scabbard, no dent, no bend and in good condition. The handle is tight fit, tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut, no loose and in good condition. The tsuba is pierced brass tsuba and matched number 12 stamped with seppa. The lock pin mechanism works perfect and tight fit to the scabbard. There is silver chrysanthemum family mon on kabutogane. blade measures 27+1/4″ tip to the guard, 26+1/8″ cutting edge , 1+1/8″ width, 6.5mm thickness at the notch and 39+1/2″ in mountings.
